 Active Directory Services

 Active Directory Features:
  • Security
  • Availabilty
  • Admin

*Security:

           1. System Quarantine:

When a remote user logs into network using VPN, his systems is put in quarantine and given limited access.The system is examined for patches, updates and antivirus signature.When it is approved , then full access is given.

           2. Password Policy:

A Group Policy for password can be created which will ensures that  only passwords of certain types can be allowed .This improves security of the network.

3. Software Restriction Policy:

A Policy can be set to prevent certain types of software from running .For eg. Mp3 and exe files can be prevented from running.

4. File Level Encryption:

Encrypted File System(EFS) is a feature of windows Server which allows files to be encrypted. So even if the file is illegally accessed , the encrptipn will ensure that contents cannot be read by unauthorized users.

5. IP Security (IP Sec):

When IPSec  is configured on the server, all data going out of the Server is encrypted in 168 – bit format. This data can be read only by PC’s which have been previously issued certificate by the IPSec Server.

6. Configure Secure Servers:

By default most services are disabled .Using the tools, the admin can choose a server template like File Server, Print Server, Domain Controller, etc. and configure specific server role making it more secure.

*Availability:

            1. Offline Folders:

A user can have full access to their network files even if they are disconnected from network. This works great for laptop users who are on the road. It also works well if the Server connection is lost.

2. Distributed File System(DFS):

In a DFS, files are stored in a logical drive and duplicated to multiple file server. So, if a server is offline or has failed , the user is directed to a mirror copy of the information stored on another server. Also when a user goes to another office at different location, he will  retrieve data from server closest to his location.

3.Volume Shadow Copy(VSC):

If a file is accidentally deleted or corrupted  using VSC , a user can recover the file in minutes without having to go to the admin to help him recover the same.

4. Advanced Server Recovery(ASR):

ASR is a utility using which the admin can quickly rebuild the failed server. ASR takes a snap shot of the server,including operating system,specific system configuration and hard disk info and stores it for future recovery.

*Admin:

            1. Single Sign On:

With AD, the administrator can add a user to Active Directory  and with the single Entry , enable remote access to network, enable user account for Exchange Messaging, Database application, CRM or other application.

Thus a single change in Active Directory can change user information for all applications and services.

2. Software Updates:

The Group Policy can be used to push out Software updates or utilities to a set of users. If an update has caused a problem, then Group Policy can be used to uninstall the update.

3.Create Standard Configuration & Settings:

A standard system setup can be created. If a user PC is not working, they can use any available system, logon & have exact access to network files & application & also have same personal favorites, Desktop settings, etc.

4.Windows Software Updates Services:

Using Windows Software Update Services , adin can automate the process of updating software patches for few or all computers in a company.

5. Remote Assistance:

A user can request assistance from admin and then grant access of his PC to admin who can then remotely troubleshoot the problem by taking remote control of the PC.

6. Server Performance:

AD allows faster access to files stored on server.This improves overall performance.

7. Remote Installation Services:

A standard image of a Desktop PC can be created and then deployed via the server to all PC’s. This greatly reduces time to get the PC’s ready.

8. Delegate Server Administration:

Using Delegation of control features, many admin tasks can be delegated to different people like password reset, reset print queues, scan for security vulnerabilities ,etc.

9.DHCP Service:

The Server automatically allocates IP address to connected PC’s and Printers.This reduces the task of manually configuring the IP for equipment.
